FAQs

Frequently asked questions for Lauten Audio

Who is Lauten Audio?

Lauten Audio is a boutique microphone maker based in the Bay Area of California. Founded in 2004 by Brian Loudensager, Lauten Audio is dedicated to innovation, pushing beyond traditional microphone designs to develop truly original, inspiring microphones.

How are Lauten Audio microphones different from others?

All Lauten Audio microphones are original designs. We craft each microphone from the ground up to simplify the recording process and make your life as an artist or engineer easier. Expect musical, mix-ready sound from every microphone, without the headaches.

How do I choose the right Lauten Audio microphone?

The best place to start is with your primary needs. For professional applications, the Eden, Atlantis, and Clarion offer the highest level of performance. If you are doing home recording, the LA-320, LA-220, and LA-120 deliver professional sound without the price tag. When working in noisy or untreated rooms, the LS-208 has got you covered. And for any drum-related applications, the Snare, Tom Mic, and Kick Mic are purpose-built to excel in both live and studio use.

How does capsule size affect microphone performance?

Large-diaphragm condensers generally deliver a warmer, denser tone that flatters vocals and gives stringed and percussion instruments a fuller, more resonant quality. In contrast, small-diaphragm condensers excel at capturing speed, detail, and natural brightness, making them ideal for bringing out the edge in acoustic guitars, violins, and drum overheads where clarity and precision are key.

How do condenser microphones sound compared to dynamic microphones?

Condenser microphones are designed to capture detail and nuance, preserving the full character of a performance. Dynamic microphones, in contrast, are less sensitive and often miss subtle information, which may or may not be desirable depending on the source. In mixing, it is typically easier to shape the sound of a condenser microphone because there is more information to work with, whereas the reduced sensitivity of a dynamic microphone makes it far more difficult to add something that wasn’t captured originally.

"Kick Mic has completely changed my workflow and thought process. The physical size of the mic is perfect for finding the sweet spot inside the drum, delivering huge low end and a smooth attack. Capturing the ideal sonic footprint of how I want the kick drum to sound and feel-whether in a mix or just during playback while tracking-is a huge part of my workflow. With Kick Mic, less EQ is needed, compression becomes a matter of taste, and the gate is used more to shape the drum’s character rather than simply control bleed."

Darrell Thorp

"Once I tried the Lauten snare mic, it never left the snare mic stand! The sound is punchy and incredibly full range. The strong rejection of high hats and kit is so effective, it almost sounds like some kind of AI magic, but it’s excellent engineering and design."

Greg Wells

"Like the name, “The Snare Mic”, this mic on snare surprises and surpasses any mic I have ever used on “Live Show Drums”. Moisture repellent, Hi Hat rejection, and thick tonalities are just a few things that make this mic a winner."

Greg Price

"This is truly my favorite tom mic. The sonic texture, the transient, and the rejection all combine to make this the absolute perfect tom mic. I haven’t changed them once since they got set up."
