"The LA-120s have been a vital part of my drum recordings for the past two years, and I honestly can’t think of a better pair of overheads. I hit drums pretty hard — it’s just how I play — and I love the tonality that comes from that intensity. That’s why it’s so important for me to have microphones I can trust to capture the full energy of my performance."

Blaine Stillman

"For the past year and a half I have exclusively used the Lauten LA-120s as the overheads on my Gretsch drum kit. Not only do they sound fantastic, but they are so easy to position exactly where I want due to their compact size. With the internal filters, I can easily switch between a super open hi-fi top end to a warmer one and also control the low end, all right from the microphone. If you need any more convincing, go check out the drums on the album, Where Did All the Butterflies Go, by Beauty School Dropout."

"I’ve been using the LA-120s constantly for recording fiddle, acoustic guitar, and mandolin, and they’ve become my go-to microphones for both studio work and everyday content creation. They capture detail without sounding brittle, and they handle transients in a way that feels honest to the instrument rather than hyped. Beyond recording, I rely on the LA-120s when I’m filming content and live-streaming music. They translate beautifully in less-than-perfect rooms, are easy to place, and give me a finished sound without a lot of extra work. Whether I’m tracking at home, on the road, or playing live online, they’re a consistent, trustworthy part of my setup."

LA-120 V2 FAQS

Frequently asked questions for LA-120 V2

Can I use the LA-120s for Choir or Orchestra?

Absolutely. The LA-120’s Cardioid and Omni capsules perform exceptionally well for choir and orchestra in both live and studio settings.

Do I need to purchase the optional in-line pads?

We recommend them when close-miking loud sound sources or using the LA-120s as drum overheads with a hard-hitting drummer. They are not required in most other applications.

Why would I use the filters on my LA-120s?

Traditional microphones have fixed resistor and capacitor configurations that shape their sound. The LA-120s let you engage or disengage these selections to optimize sound and performance for each sound source without physically changing microphones. This affects not only the microphone’s sound and performance but also how your preamp interacts with it.
