28dB OFF-AXIS REJECTION

Snare Mic captures a snare drum's true impact, body, and timbre while rejecting up to 28dB of off-axis sounds. This means clear, mix-ready sonics with optimal phase coherence straight out of the microphone.

ON-BOARD SOUND SHAPING

Unlike the filters in your DAW or console, these settings affect Snare Mic’s entire sonic spectrum.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE SNARE DRUM

Every drummer has a story about a snare drum. And within that story is a complex emotional relationship that is deeply felt but rarely discussed.

LOW PASS

Snare Mic’s filters differ from those found on a mixing console, preamp, or DAW.
FLAT LOW PASS
Snare Mic’s unaltered high-frequency response is designed for mix-ready sound. It maximizes stick crack and playing dynamics while delivering open, lifelike top-end air.
12kHz LOW PASS
Smooth out the high end for a dynamic microphone-style sound. This setting balances the microphone's sound and adds a dip after 7kHz to help reduce cymbal bleed, followed by a slight increase from 12kHz to 15kHz to help maintain a natural, open snare attack.
5kHz LOW PASS
Reduce extreme bleed caused by cymbal or stage volume. This setting creates a much smoother response from 1kHz to 7kHz, with a slight rise in the 5kHz to 7kHz range, followed by an immediate drop off after 7kHz, so that more character, presence, and attack can be EQ’d back into a sound without accentuating problematic high-frequency information.

HIGH PASS

Snare Mic’s filters differ from those found on a mixing console, preamp, or DAW.
FLAT HIGH PASS
Allow all low-frequency information to pass for chest-pounding bottom-end with each snare strike.
80Hz HIGH PASS
Reduce low-frequency spillover from kick drums and toms while adding a slight presence boost to the sound of your snare drum.
140Hz HIGH PASS
Retain the presence boost of your snare drum’s fundamental frequency while significantly reducing phase incoherence and spillover from kick drums and toms.

"Once I tried the Lauten snare mic, it never left the snare mic stand! The sound is punchy and incredibly full range. The strong rejection of high hats and kit is so effective, it almost sounds like some kind of AI magic, but it’s excellent engineering and design."

Greg Wells

"The Lauten snare mic is now my go-to mic for all of my snare recording needs. In the studio or on the stage, Lauten is my favorite boutique microphone company that consistently puts out incredible quality mics that push the envelope. Bravo!"

Brad Wilk

"Like the name, “The Snare Mic”, this mic on snare surprises and surpasses any mic I have ever used on “Live Show Drums”. Moisture repellent, Hi Hat rejection, and thick tonalities are just a few things that make this mic a winner."

Greg Price

"I found my new ‘go to’ mic in the Lauten Snare Mic. I find I don’t need any processing when recording or mixing."

SNARE MIC FAQS

Frequently asked questions for Snare Mic.

How is Snare Mic different from a Dynamic Mic?

Snare Mic’s design focuses on the complete sound of a snare drum rather than solely on the transient peak. Its clear and balanced capture of the drum’s attack and fundamental, paired with its density of sound, allows the true tone of snare drum to shine through in even the most dense mixes.

How does Snare Mic’s rejection compare to a dynamic microphone?

Snare Mic’s cardioid capsule is designed to capture the complete sound of a snare drum. When placed as directed in the quick start guide, you will experience a reduction in off-axis cymbal bleed, and the bleed that does come through is highly musical rather than harsh or abrasive.

Will Snare Mic work on side or bottom snare positions?

It will! In either position, we recommend exploring Snare Mic’s high-pass filter settings to maximize impact while minimizing low-end interference and bass drum bleed. High-pass settings can also be used in the top-snare position to shift the focus away from the fundamental to emphasize attack.
